United star Wayne grabs his injured foot against Bayern.
Wayne Rooney being major doubt for Manchester United’s win or loose Champions League tie with Bayern Munich next week.
Rooney has been ruled out of United’s game against Newcastle with a toe injury sustained in the 1-1 draw with Bayern last Tuesday night.
United boss David Moyes describing the striker as “touch and go” to be fit for Wednesday’s second leg against the European Cup holders at the Allianz Arena.
And Moyes also revealed that Rooney may have suffered a hairline fracture – which could see him sidelined for several weeks.
With van Persie already out with a sprained knee, the loss of Rooney would be a huge blow to the Red devils slim hopes of overcoming Bayern.
United's boss Moyes said: “Wayne is injured. He has a badly bruised toe so he won’t be involved against Newcastle. It will be touch and go for Wayne for Wednesday.
“It’s football. You look at what Wayne has done for us in the last few league games for instance. Against Aston Villa, he scored two goals and there were couples at West Ham, including that special goal.
“Wayne Rooney has been an integral part of that because of the goals he scores for us. He’s a miss for that, never mind going forward.
“It’s a toe injury and they’re never easy when you sustain one. You could see him limping in the game – towards the end, quite badly.
“He has a bad toe. There’s not an awful lot you can do with a toe injury. Sometimes you can feel better quite quickly with them and sometimes you need to be injected to play with it if it’s bruising.
“With a lot of toe injuries, you have to make sure there isn’t a hairline fracture or crack in your toe. We will have all that checked.”
Moyes also said that he was unsure whether Rooney suffered the injury in the 90th minute foul on him by Bastian Schweinsteiger
“I never asked,” said the Scot. “But I didn’t think it was in that challenge. I thought it was done prior to that, but I never asked the question.”
Van Persie was ruled out for four to six weeks with a knee injury suffered in United’s 3-0 Champions League win over Olympiakos on March 19, and has returned to his Dutch homeland for treatment for world cup
Moyes added: “Van Persie is over in Holland having treatment and we get a daily update of exactly how he is. He’s getting better.
“He’s as well doing all of his recovery and rehab back there. He’s coming on, as far as we know. I was told four to six weeks by the doctors and there hasn’t been any reason to tell me any more or any less time.
“We will monitor that. My hope was that we would get him back before the end of the season, that’s for sure.
“The big thing is we’ll be medically led. We won’t push. If it’s not right, we certainly would not bring him back sooner. We will totally be led by the medical team and Robin.
“Robin is a very good judge of how his own body feels, It’s part of how we’ve tried to deal with Robin through the season and giving him the understanding that he tells us how he feels. He’ll be the first one to tell us how he is.”
